A Triple Celebration: Honoring Mrs. Helen Moore

A Triple Celebration: Honoring Mrs. Helen Moore

Mrs. Helen Moore is not only a cherished member of the Barton Elementary‑Middle School and DPSCD community, but also a respected civil rights activist, community advocate, education champion, and a true Detroit legend. Her lifelong dedication to uplifting others has left a lasting impact on generations across the city. As a volunteer with the Let’s Read program, Mrs. Moore generously dedicates her time each week at Barton Elementary‑Middle School, supporting elementary students as they strengthen their foundational reading skills and gain a deep sense of self. Barton students and staff deeply appreciate her commitment, as her efforts have contributed to significant growth in students’ reading abilities.

In November 2025, Mrs. Moore was formally recognized for her outstanding service by former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, DPSCD Board Members, Detroit City Council members, community leaders, the Dexter‑Elmhurst community, and Barton staff. Family, friends, and supporters gathered on a cold winter day to celebrate her remarkable legacy and lifelong contributions. The celebration also highlighted the newly renovated Helen Moore Community Center, located at 11825 Dexter, which now offers a wide range of programs including clubs, games, arts and crafts, homework assistance, and more for community members.

Mrs. Moore’s connection to Barton is especially meaningful, as her children are proud graduates of Barton Elementary‑Middle School. Her continued service reflects a lifelong commitment to giving back to youth—a mission she has championed since the 1960s. It is our honor to recognize and celebrate Mrs. Helen Moore during Black History Month, National Reading Month, and Women's History Month.
